The procedure here is exactly the same as when building a self-locking differential into a car not equipped with this mechanism at the factory. In that case the only exception is at the beginning: Remove differential housing and take crown wheel (US: ring gear) off housing. Removal of final drive cf. 33 10 010. Removal of self-locking differential cf. 33 14 010. Take crown wheel (US: ring grar) off self-locking differential. Note when assembling: Fit on crown wheel (US: ring gear) cold. Clean bolt threads thoroughly. Insert bolts with Loctite AVV. Pull off taper roller bearing by means of Rollex 503349. Note when assembling: Press on taper roller bearing cold. 33 10 010 33 14 010 ¹) see Specifications

Build in new self-locking differential without crown wheel (US: ring gear). Tighten cap fastening bolts evenly (2.0 ± 0.5 mkp/ 14.46 ± 3.615 ft./Ib.). Measure frictional volue¹). If the frictional value is lower than required, find out size of gap and use corresponding shim. | ![]() |
By fitting shims (2) with the necessary thickness, adjust torsional backlash and contact pattern as desired. Move shims (2) from one side to the other until torsional backlash¹) and the contact pattern are correct. Make sure that the overall thickness of both shims together is never changed. ¹) see Specifications.

If the contact pattern is not correct, adjust by means of shim X. For doing this, basic rules of adjusting contact pattern on page 33-12/11. Important: Before unscrewing collar nut (1) check frictional value. Make it a rule to always replace tensioning bush (2). Adjust bevel drive pinion bearing to the frictional value measured prior to disassembly. When doing this, make sure that the collar nut is tightened to a torque of at least 15 mkp (108.45 ft Ib) . If this value of 15 mkp (108.45 ft Ib) is not reached or if it is exceeded, replace tensioning bush (2) and pepreat the measuring process. | ![]() |
