The torque converter cannot be cleaned with common workshop equipment. Replace a torque converter if a) the bearing surface of the converter shaft is damaged, b) the drive lugs are broken, c) the drive shell mountings are cracked, d) rotor (L) and turbine (T) cannot be turned by hand or e) the oil filter screen is torn. Checking torque converter in vehicle: Engine oil and transmission fluid must be at operating temperature. Engine must develop full output. Start engine. Apply parking brakes; press hard on brake pedal. Move selector lever to R or1; press accelerator pedal to full throttle. Read stall speed ¹ on tachometer. Caution! Danger of overheating if stall speed test takes longer than 10 seconds.
