Detach battery minus cable.
Remove air cleaner housing - see 13 71 000.
Detach accelerator cable at operating lever and counter-
holder.
Note when fitting: Adjust accelerator cable and pressure
rod - see 24 00 004.

Drain oil.
Caution! Never reuse drained oil.
Note when fitting: If the oil has a burnt odor and a black
discoloration, the transmission must be dismantled if the
oil has a silver-grey glow, this concers aluminium or iron
dust. In contradiction to iron dust, aluminium cannot be
held tight by magnets.
Remove oil filler neck.
Plug opening.
Note when fitting: Replace oil seal (1) if necessary.

Remove entire exhaust system - see 18 00 020.
Detach elbow pipe or oil line at engine and transmission.
Caution! From Transmission Number 16 676 (ZF) the oil line
connection bores are cylindrical.

Make sure that the seals (D) are always installed.
The transmission will leak oil if these seals are missing.

Disconnect multiple plug (1).
Loosen support bracket (2); remove guard (3).

Detach torque converter from the drive shell at four points.

Detach the selector rod (4) at the selector lever and the
Giubo clutch at the driven flange.

Loosen threaded bush (5).
Detach the center holder.
Note when fitting: Pre-load the center holder in driving
direction with 2 mm (0.079").

Bend down the propeller shaft and pull the centering
bearing off of the centering pin.

Pull of the stop pad (6).
Remove the speedometer shaft (7).
Disconnect the backup light wire (8).
Detach the cross member at the body and transmission
mount.
Have engine oil pan rest on the front axle carrier.

Support the transmission with a jack and attachment 7060.
Detach the ground strap.
Separate the transmission and engine.

Pull the transmission off of the engine and also press off
the torque converter at the same time.

Note when fitting: The torque converter is positioned cor-
rectly when the guide pin is located below the housing edge.
If not, guide the torque converter into the primary pump
by turning slightly.
Lubricate the converter journal.

Note when fitting: Check the drive shell for cracks, re-
placing if necessary.
Only hold the flywheel with holder 7007 to replace.
Caution! The thickness of the drive shell has been changed
from 1.5 mm (0.059") to 2.0 mm (0.079"). When replacing
only use the 2.0 mm (0.079") thick drive shell.
