Checking operation At idle speed, it should be possible to engage reverse gear without gear noise after 3 to 5 seconds. Check the driving plate for wear before removing from the car. A) Outside throwout arm Press the throwout arm by hand in at forward direction until it touches the stop. When new, distance A should be 17 ÷ 19 mm (0.67 ÷ 75 in), measured at the thrust rod. If A is less than 5 mm (0.2 in), renew the driving plate. | ![]() |
B) Inside throwout arm If test gauge BMW 7061 can be inserted into the opening on the slave cylinder as far as its handle, the clutch lining is still in good condition. | ![]() |
If a gap of approx. 5 mm (0.2 in) remains between the gauge handle and the slave cylinder, (A), the clutch lining is worn ot the limit and must be exchanged. | ![]() |
Remove and install the clutch housing 21 11 000. Check runout of diaphragm spring outer ends¹. Prevent flywheel form turning with BMW 7007 locking device. Loosen all clutch retaining bolts by 1 to 1½ turns until the clutch spring loading has been released. Remove the retaining bolts and take off the clutch and driving plate. When installing: a) Mount clutch body on pegs. Tighten retaining bolts in turn by 1 to 1½ turns. For tightening torque, see Specifications. b) Note color code (F) on clutch¹. c) Check free movement of gearbox input shaft bearing in crankshaft. d) Apply a thin coat of Molykote Longterm 2 to the gearbox input shaft splines. The driving plate must slide easily on the splines. Warning: Never throw or drop the clutch. If carelessly handled, the three tangential leaf springs that hold the clutch in its direction of rotation could become bent.@@L The diaphragm spring will then attempt to separate the clutch plates, but the weakened or remaining leaf springs will not permit the thrust ring to rise sufficiently, and the clutch will not be properly disengaged. 21 11 000 ¹ See technical data.

Check the driving plate for wear¹ (A) and cracks, and inspect the torsional vibration damper to ensure that the spring elements are firmly seated and no cracks are visible. When installing: Install the clutch plate the correct way round. ¹ See technical data

Inspect the clutch externally for cracks, wear or local burning. Warning: Local burns are frequently the cause of clutch judder. The contact face must be quite flat. | ![]() |
Inspect rivets for wear and tightness. Exchange clutch if rivet heads are loose or worn. | ![]() |
Inspect spring link between pressure plate and cover. If rivets are loose, exchange clutch. | ![]() |
