A) Version with pressure sensor
Requirements:
a) correct ignition timing and tappert clearance
b) coil temperature about 60° (140° F)
c) auxiliary air valve closed¹
d) air filter cartridge checked for good condition
Connect tachometer and CO tester.
Adjust idle speed with idle air screw (1).
Europe: 850 to 1000 rpm
USA: 900 to 950 rpm

¹ From 70° C 158° F) colant temperature

Adjust fuel volume at idle speed with potentiometer (2).
Turning potentiometer counterclockwise will reduse CO by volume².
If turning potentiometer does not change CO level, check throttle
valve switch or throttle gap - see 13 63 534.

² Europe: 1.0 - 2.0; USA: 1.5 2.0

B) Version with air flow sensor
a) Engine idle speed
Adjust the idle speed¹ to 900 to 950 rpm with screw (1).
Turning screw (1) clockwise will reduce the idle speed.
The engine must run as smoothly as possible for this adjustment.

¹ Differs from reference value - see "Troubleshooting" on page 13-60/16.

b) Exhaust gas test
At idle speed the CO level must be between 1.0 and 2.5% by volume.
CO level too low:
a) Leak in intake system (after air flow sensor)
b) Auxiliary air valve defectice - see 11 61 090
c) Fuel pressure regulator defective - see 13 51 200
d) Fuel filter partially displaced - see 13 32 051
e) Check fuel pump pressure - see 13 31 029
f) Check vacuum restriction valve - see 11 74 521
g) Test by exchanging control unit - see 13 61 000
h) Check function of fuel injection electric equipment with Bosch
tester 0 684 100 202 - see 13 60 009
If positions a through h do not indicate any faults, the CO level can
be adjust to the reference range with idle air control screw (2) in the
air flow sensor.
CO level too high:
a) Oil dipstick seal in guide tubs is not proper
b) Too much oil in crankcase
c) Intake and/or exhaust valves leak
d) Test by exchanging air flow sensor - see 13 62 000
e) Cold starting device will not switch off - see 13 64 009
f) Check function of fuel injection electric equipment with Bosch
tester 0 684 100 202 - see 13 60 009
g) Injection valve lea - see 13 64 501
If positions a through go do not indicate any faults, the CO level can
be adjusted to the reference range with idle air control screw (2) in the
air flow sensor. This requires lifting off the plastic cap.
