Disassemble starter - see 12 41 513.
Check armature and field coil with 220 volt test lamp.
Hold test points against commutator and metal assembly.
If grounded lamp lights up - replace armature.

Connect ammeter (60 ampere range) in current circuit hold
points on commutator briefly from segment to segment.
Test voltage is 2 to 4 volts.
The instrument needle deflection should be equal for all
segments.
Considerable deviations indicate a break.
Replace an armature having a break.

Check exciter winding for ground.
Inspect visually.
Replace burnt or charred windings.

Fine machine the commutator.
The commutator diameter (A) may ot le less than 33 mm/1.299".

Cut back commutator segments.
Insulation must be deeper than the segments by 0.5 mm/0.020".

Pres out worn bushes.
Note when fitting: Soak ew bushes in engine oil for at
least ½ hour before installation and then press in flush.

Only applicable to 1.2 HP version:
Press worn bushes out of intermediate bearing.
Note when fitting: Soak new bushes in engine oil for at
least ½ hour before installation and then press in flush.
