Warning: Within any one engine, install only connecting rods of the same weight group with a total tolerance of ± 4 g (0.141 oz) not including bearing shells. The weight group can be identified from the color coding. If the color coding is not visible, a further connecting rod should be removed and the weights compared. | ![]() |
Install the big end bearing shells in the connecting rod. Place Plastigage Type PG 1 on to an oil-free big end bearing journal. Attach the connecting rod to the crankshaft. The machining numbers must be on the same side of the engine. The oil drillway in the big end should face towards the timing chain. | ![]() |
Tighten the bearing cop to the prescribed torque¹. Warning: Do not twist either connecting rod or crankshaft Take off the bearing cap. Determine bearing play¹ by comparing the width of the compressed plastic strip with the reference scale. "Plastigage" available from: Messrs.
